On the same day that I bought the Les Dauphins palette by Chantecaille (see my March 2010 review), I bought a Shine Eye Shade palette refill pan in the color Pyrite. I’ve been wearing it a lot lately, and I love it. I award it five flowers.
As reference, I have light-to-medium skin with yellow undertones and very dark hair and eyes. I prefer a no-makeup look in the hot summer weather, and Pyrite works really well for me. In the pan, the color reminds me of sunlit wet sand. Upon application, it imparts a sheer veil of glimmer that can be polished to a higher sheen. I’ve rejected other gold-type eye shadows because they were too yellow, too mustard, too brassy, too orange, or too dark–they all made me look like I had applied eye shadow. In comparison, Pyrite seems to meld with my own skin so that only a glistening halo is seen. It adds a bit of polish to my face without being obvious. It was a very hot, humid day today, and I used just a sheer dab of Pyrite on my eyelids and blended it with a clean brush from the lids toward the browbone, dispersing the color so that only a nude sheen remained. I groomed my brows and applied a tinted lip balm, and my quick summertime face was done.
Pyrite’s application is so easy and virtually foolproof for me. Like the other powder Chantecaille eye shadows I’ve been using, the texture is silky and very blendable. I can easily control how much color I apply because the color easily picks up onto my brush without my having to swirl the brush into the pan and generate a lot of “ash.” I tend to apply my eye shadows with a very light hand, so I tap or softly sweep my brush into Pyrite, tap the color onto my eyelids, then blend. I can pair Pyrite with a crease color or with eyeliner, but most often, I have been wearing it solo.
The palette refill I purchased was US$21, but the eye shadows are also available in individual compact form for US$28. Each pan contains 0.08 ounces (2.5g). Chantecaille products are available at select department stores such as Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, Bergdorf Goodman, and Saks Fifth Avenue. Shop online with those retailers or on the Chantecaille website.
