A rose is a rose, is a rose...but the saying doesn't apply when it comes to cotton squares, or facial cotton. The question has been asked before - is there really a difference between department store cosmetics brand facial cotton and the package of cotton squares you can buy at your local drugstore?
YES!!!!
I've used several different brands of facial cotton (and yes, when I can find the new, "limited edition" Chanel cotton squares, I'll probably try those too), and I can absolutely confirm that there is a difference. I'm going to focus this review on what I think is the gold standard of facial cotton that I've used thus far - Cle de Peau Facial Cotton. I never would have picked these up on my own. Long ago, I heard a rave on the vine for them. Then one day, I was in Saks, trying out the CdP concealer, and low and behold, the sales associate used some facial cleansing water and the CdP cotton square to remove what I already had on. One touch, and I just knew.
What sets these facial cotton squares apart from any other brand? Well, they're incredibly soft and silky smooth, for one. It's pretty much a guarentee that you will never get that scratchy feeling when you glide one of these across your face or eyelids. You know how if you have a cotton square/round/puff from the drug store, and sometimes there is a, well, for lack of a better word, chunk of stiffer cotton on it? That can scratch the surface of your skin. Sure, it won't be a major scrape or anything, but it still isn't great for your skin.
Secondly, these cotton squares are thick and luxurious, and slightly larger than your average cotton square. When I saturate one with whatever product I'm using (facial clensing water, toner, nail polish remover, etc), it never drips; it holds moisture very well, so it's not dripping all over the place. Even when a square is saturated, it never shreds or falls apart on me, it always stays in one piece. I always hated it when I would use a cotton square and it would tear in half, or if I was removing glitter nail polish, how it would leave strings of cotton behind. These facial cotton squares are so sturdy and tough, but at the same time, gentle as can be!
Priced at $17 for a box of 120 pieces (that's 14 cents per cotton square for those of us who like to keep track), it's on the pricier side of cotton. But I've repurchased this several times, and I will continue to do so. This product can be found at department stores that carry Cle de Peau cosmetics, as well as online at Nieman Marcus.
I'm awarding Cle de Peau Beate Facial Cotton 4 luxurious flowers. I did feel like I have to take one off for the price. But I'll gladly pay it, time and time again.
