I have been strangely drawn to trying Neutrogena lip colors over the years (see my earlier reviews on MoistureShine Soothing LipSheers and MoistureShine Tinted Lip Balms). I know it is because I am a sucker for lipstick that has sunscreen protection. My latest experiment has been with MoistureShine Lipstick SPF20. The LipSheers and Tinted Lip Balms were sheer and sheerer, respectively, but these lipsticks offer creamier coverage, though some colors are more opaque than others. The Brazilian palm butter ingredient is meant to offer a moisture boost to the lips.
MoistureShine Lipstick comes in a nice array of shades–currently twenty in all. I have tried several different colors because I purchased them at a very low price. For reference, I have medium skin tone with slight yellow undertones, and very dark hair and eyes. My natural lip color is not rosy, and they are uneven in color. In the universe of lipsticks, I typically can find only a few that I think are flattering on me.
-Anything Rose: pink-brown that looks pink on me. Although it is a medium shade, there are times when I think it looks too milky on me.
-Think Pink: shimmery pink that looks very pink on me. It is lighter, cooler-toned, shimmery, and slightly more sheer than Anything Rose. I tossed this one because it was too cool-toned for me.
-Mauve On: medium mauve-pink. This does not have the milky tones that Anything Rose has on me, and it does not have the brown/nude tones, either.
-Playful Plum: sheer, frosty light plum with cool tones, the plum version of Think Pink. I tossed it because it looks terrible on me–too sheer, and the cool shimmery effect is very draining on my complexion.
-Plum Paradise: classic-looking plum that is not burgundy, berry, purple, or red. I think this will be a staple for me in autumn and winter.
Generally, I like these lipsticks. The application is creamy without being mushy or slick, and the formula is comfortable on my lips. It seems as though the non-shimmery colors deposit more color than the shimmery colors. There are times when I feel like the application is too heavy, but blotting the color lightly cures the problem. The color wear is average. I reapply it after eating or drinking, but otherwise the color stays true. I also like that the formula contains sunscreen.
I am holding back a five-flower rating because I cannot get past the feeling that these lipsticks have a cheap feeling to them. I dislike the fruity scent, which reminds me of undone red Jello. I can smell it when I remove the cap from the tube, but thankfully, it is not strong enough to deter me from wearing the lipstick. Also, I happen to dislike the clunky clear packaging, but I realize the packaging could be much worse.
I award Neutrogena MoistureShine Lipstick four flowers. Regular price is about US$9 for a 0.12-ounce tube. Neutrogena cosmetics are readily available at most drugstores, and at mass retail stores such as Target and KMart.
